Dr. Reid MeLellan - BIO
Dr. Reid has been handicapping horse races since 1965 when he was a student at LSU and Evangeline Downs opened in Lafayette. "Doc" was at Louisiana Tech University (where he founded an award winning Equine Specialty Program in which students received a B.S. degree and a Louisiana trainer’s license) when Louisiana Downs opened in Bossier City in 1974-75 and he considers LaD his "home" track.
After leaving Tech in 1988 he trained horses for eight years then became Racing Education Manager at Sam Houston Race Park in 1996. He uses his education, training background, racing contacts (his youngest son is a head assistant trainer at Churchill Downs and Fairgrounds) and writing ability in his "Purple Power Family" of tipsheets that cover all three Class 1 tracks in Texas, Louisiana Downs and Fairgrounds. He has been leading handicapper in Houston for 12 of the 16 meetings (8 TB and 8 QH) since he joined the handicapping and his flagship "Purple Power for Sam Houston Race Park" outperforms all other tipsheets in the area combined.
